Reporter 1: What are some of the things that you would like to share with the Claflin family and the Orangeburg community that you didn’t get a chance to share?
Jackson: Access to affordable healthcare and access to education and effective use of our voters is what we should focus on
Reporter 2: How do you plan on influencing voter registration in South Carolina?
Jackson: by going school by school, church by church, I’m very excited to watch Claflin students come alive.
Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. encourages minorities to register to vote, in order to make a change. He spent years going on tour of various HBCU’s to encourage voting in minorities and gave out the proper forms for them to register to vote. Jackson graduated from college in 1864 with a degree in sociology, and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in Selma, Alabama. Jackson founded the Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), to advocate for black self-help and it served as his political pulpit. The National Rainbow Coalition with a mission of establishing equal rights for African Americans, women and homosexuals. The two organizations merged in 1996 to form the Rainbow PUSH coalition.
Jackson became the second African American to run for President in 1984, after the first black woman Shirley Anita Chisholm elected into congress in 1968 and first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States 1972. As an author, he has multiple books on the views of how minorities are viewed, he uses his books to inform those who are in higher authority to take action and take on a different prospective.
Jackson is a supporter of young black males going into the tech career field, he states that HBCUs can also leverage these corporate relationships to garner resources to support the educational and entrepreneurship. “Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result, tears will get you sympathy and sweat will get you change.”- Jesse Jackson 1941, Through The Present.
